Cycling through the fortifications of Cavallino

Cavallino-Treporti is not just a natural paradise, but also an open-air museum.

A precious architectural heritage made of many military fortifications, you can see by cycling along the coastline, is located all over the municipality and tells an important aspect of the historical and cultural identity of Cavallino-Treporti.

Forts, batteries, telemetry towers, barracks and bunkers, built to defend Venice during the Austrian domination and the World Wars, today surrounded by cultivated gardens or used as warehouses, are a great attractions for military buildings lovers. Here some suggestions to discover by bicycle the most beautiful buildings located between Cavallino and Punta Sabbioni and a useful map you can download to plan your trip.

The telemetry towers

Cycling along via Pordelio from Cavallino towards Punta Sabbioni you will see on your left many towers. What they were there for? They were telemetry towers, built to sight the enemy army and calculate its distance from the coast. Placed all over the territory (you can see some of them also cycling on the main road via Fausta), they were very useful because on their top the watchmen could sight the enemies coming from far and warn the batteries.

The Old Fort (Forte Vecchio)

In Punta Sabbioni you can admire the Old Fort, also known as Fort of Treporti. It has been built between 1845 and 1851 to protect the harbour of Punta Sabbioni and defend Venice Lagoon as the two telemetry towers located nearby, erected during the First World War.

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

The Batteries

While the telemetry towers were located in an internal and hidden position to be less visible, the batteries were located along the coastline, ready to shoot the enemy. The Amalfi, San Marco and Radaelli Batteries, built at the beginning of 1900 and armed with 360° rotating tower with very long range guns, were particularly operative on the front of Basso Piave, instead the Pisani Battery, especially during the II World War, was very active to fight the aircraft artillery.

Batteria Pisani a Ca’ Savio

Today many batteries are closed, but Amalfi and Pisani batteries have been recently restored and will be open to the public starting from July. Get the opportunity to visit them as the other military fortification and discover the wonderful historical treasure of Cavallino-Treporti!
