Vogalonga & Moonlight Half Marathon

The month of May is one of the best periods to practice sport in our surroundings and just in this month will take place two very important and expected events: the Vogalonga and the Moonlight Half Marathon.

Have you ever heard about them? Do you want to know more? Read this article!

The Vogalonga

This year the 42nd Vogalonga will take place in Venice on May 15.

Its origins go back to 1975, when a group of Venetians decided to organize a non-competitive regatta dedicated to all rowing lovers. The aim of the regatta was to keep alive the Venetian traditions but also to highlight the problem of wave motion, which year by year has been damaging the city. The first regatta, with a path of 30 km through the canals and the most picturesque places in the Venetian lagoon, took place on May 8 when about 500 boats with 1500 participants gathered in St. Mark’s Basin in front of Doge’s Palace. Many traditional Venetian rowing boats – among them “caorline”, “mascarete”, “pupparini” and “sandali” – participated to the regatta but even boats of famous sports clubs coming from other regions. The success increased up to 1550 boats with about 5800 participants in 2007 and also this year many boats are expected.

According to the tradition, the start of the Vogalonga will take place at 9:00 a.m. in the Giudecca Canal, where after the traditional rowing up, will be kicked off with a cannon shot. All boats shall gather in rearward position at Punta della Dogana, in accordance with the indications of technical commissioners who will line up the boats, starting from the faster. The race will continue to the island of St. Helena, where the regatta will skirt the islands of Vignole, Sant’Erasmo and San Francesco del Deserto. At about the midway point, the Vogalonga will touch Burano and the islands of Mazzorbo, Madonna del Monte and San Giacomo in Paludo, then get to Murano via the Grand Canal. Once in Venice, the parade will sail along the Cannaregio Canal and the Grand Canal to get the arrival in Punta della Dogana, right in front of St. Mark, where all rowers who reach the finish will receive a medal in recognition for having participated in this wonderful event to safeguard the city.

The Moonlight Half Marathon

The 6th Moonlight Half Marathon will be run this year on May 28 on a fast and flowing track of 21.097 km between the cities of Cavallino-Treporti and Lido di Jesolo. The race between the lagoon and the sea under the sunset will start at 07.30 p.m. from Lungomare San Felice in Cavallino. On the way to Cavallino, the athletes will be fascinated by the lagoon landscape with its typical canals, fish valleys and sand banks dominated by a lush nature and flamingos. After passing the center of Cavallino and the bridge over the Sile river (this is the only difficulty of the track), the run will continue in the municipality of Lido di Jesolo on the promenade along the coastline and reach the finish line in Mazzini Square, the heart of the city.
