Happy San Martino! – A typical Venetian recipe –

Every year on 11th November the feast day of San Martino (Saint Martin) is celebrated in Venice and all over the province.

Venetian people feel this festival still very much and during this day it is easy to meet children walking up and down and singing a nursery rhyme, in exchange for sweets and coins.
Once ago for this occasion every family prepared for the kids the typical cake but nowadays you can buy it at the most part of pastry shops and bakeries. It’s a short pastry cake, decorated with icing and a lot of sweets, confetti, candies and milk chocolates on the top. The shape is that of knight (Saint Martin) on his horse with his sword.

If you want to taste this yummy cake, you can try to make it your own following this recipe (it’s not very complicate!).
Make a short-crust pastry, shape it as a knight on a horse (you can do it cutting a sheet of oven-proof paper measuring about 30×40 cm.), cook for 15-20 minutes at 180° and decorate with icing, sweets, confetti candies and milk chocolates.
Here the ingredients for the short-crust pastry:

  • 250 gr flour
  • 150 gr sugar
  • 100 gr butter
  • 1 egg yolk.
